The Walk to Assos Castle: A Journey Through Venetian History
The village of Assos is often called the most beautiful spot in Kefalonia, but the real magic lies above it. The hike to the Venetian Castle of Assos is a “must-do” for anyone visiting the island.
The Route
The trail is a wide, paved serpentine path that winds up the hillside.
- Distance: Approximately 2km from the village center.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate (it’s an uphill walk, but the path is very stable).
At the Top
Once you pass through the massive arched stone gate, you enter a 16th-century fortress. You can explore the ruins of the High Command’s house, the church of San Marco, and the old prison cells.
The Reward
The view of the Assos harbor and the white cliffs of the island from the castle walls is the best photo opportunity in Kefalonia.
