If you want to stand on the “Roof of the Ionian,” Mount Aenos is your destination. Rising to 1,628 meters, this National Park offers a completely different side of Kefalonia—cool air, dense forests, and views that stretch as far as the Peloponnese.
The Trails of Aenos
There are several routes, but these two are the most loved by hikers:
- The Circular Route (Hionistra): A relatively easy 6km trail that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. It’s perfect for those who want to see the famous Black Fir trees (Abies Cephalonica) without too much strain.
- The Summit Trail (Digaleto to Megas Soros): This is for the adventurers. It’s a 6.5km steady climb that leads you to the highest point, Megas Soros.
Why It’s Unique
Mount Aenos is a protected ecosystem. If you’re lucky, you might spot the wild horses of Aenos roaming the lower slopes. The silence at the top, combined with the scent of the fir trees, makes it a spiritual experience.
